The Chiffon Secret: How to Keep Your Sheer Dupattas from Snagging
Read time: 3 min · Last updated: 2026-01-16
Chiffon is the "Drama" of the kurta sets world. It provides that bouncy, airy, "Bollywod-style" movement. But Chiffon is also a "Victim." It’s a very loose weave. It’s practically a net. And because it’s so thin, it "Catches" on everything: Your watch, your rings, your handbag, and especially the "Hooks" of your bra or the zipper of your jeans.
If you don't respect the Chiffon, it won't last a month. Here is how I keep mine pristine years after buying them.
Rule 1: The "Separate" Wash
Never, ever wash a sheer or chiffon dupatta with your jeans or towels. The heavy fabrics will "Abrade" (rub against) the chiffon and create "Pilling" (those tiny fuzz balls). * The Move: Give it a 2-minute soak in cold water with a very mild liquid soap. Swish. Rinse. Lay flat. * Don't wring it out. It doesn't need it. It dries in 10 minutes anyway.
Rule 2: The "Zipper" Lockdown
This is a lifestyle change. Before you put on your kurta set, make sure every zipper in your house is closed. Make sure your jewelry is "Smooth" (no sharp prongs for stones). If you’re carrying a bag with a chain strap, hang the dupatta on the other shoulder. Chain straps are the #1 killer of chiffon.
Rule 3: The "Roll" Storage
Don't hang your chiffon dupattas on wire hangers. The gravity of the fabric will eventually "Pull" and distort the shape. * The Hack: Fold them into a long strip and then "Roll" them like a sushi roll. * The Benefit: Zero creases. Zero stress on the fibers. And you can see clearly what color they are when you open your drawer.
Rule 4: Handling the "Snag"
If you accidentally pull a thread and get a "Bunch" in the fabric: 1. Don't cut it! 2. Gently pull the fabric in the opposite direction of the snag. 3. Move your hands in a "X" motion over the snag area to "Massage" the threads back into their place. Chiffon is a "Grid." If you’re patient, you can usually reset the grid.
FAQs
Q: Can I iron chiffon? A: Use a very low setting. Better yet, use a steamer. If you use a traditional iron, always use a "Pressing cloth" (a thin cotton towel) between the iron and the chiffon.
Q: Is "Pure" chiffon better than "Poly" chiffon? A: Pure silk chiffon is more breathable and has a better "Glow," but it’s 10x more fragile. Poly-chiffon (like the ones we use for some daily sets) is a bit more "Tough" and handles active use better.
Q: Why is my white chiffon turning yellow? A: Sun and Perfume. Never spray perfume directly on the dupatta. It "Burns" the delicate fibers and leaves a yellow stain that is impossible to remove.
