Monsoon Fashion: How to Keep Your Kurta Sets Dry and Stylish
Read time: 3 min · Last updated: 2026-01-16
Monsoon in India is beautiful, but it’s a death sentence for poorly chosen kurta sets.
Water splashes. Mud. Humidity that makes everything smell damp. If you’re wearing the wrong thing, you’ll look like a drowned cat by the time you reach your office.
I’ve survived enough Bombay and Bangalore monsoons to know the system. Here’s the rainy-day manual.
Rule 1: Fabric Selection is Life
Forget silk. Forget heavy velvet. They will never dry. They will get water spots that never come out.
Go for: * Rayon and Viscose: They dry incredibly fast. * Synthetics/Blends: This is the only time I’ll tell you to wear a blend. They don't absorb water as much as pure cotton. * Crepe: Doesn't wrinkle, even when damp.
Rule 2: Hemline Height
This is not the time for floor-length Anarkalis or wide-leg palazzos. You don't want your outfit acting like a mop for the sidewalk.
Switch to: * Pencil pants: They stay away from the puddles. * Ankle-length kurtas: Safer and smarter. * Cigarette pants: Maximum style, minimum mud.
Rule 3: Dark Colors Only
White is a "No" in the rain. Unless you want everyone to see your under-garments (transparency issue) or you want to show off every single mud splash.
Go for: * Indigos. * Dark Maroons. * Blacks. * Deep Olives. They hide the mess.
Rule 4: The Dupatta Dilemma
Skip the cotton dupatta. It gets heavy when wet. Use a chiffon or georgette one. They’re light. They dry in 10 minutes under a fan. They don't lose их color.
FAQs
Q: My outfit smells damp. What do I do? A: Never fold damp clothes. Hang them in a well-ventilated area under a fan. Use cedar wood or lavender sachets in your closet.
Q: Are juttis okay in the rain? A: No. Leather juttis will be destroyed by water. Switch to stylish rubber sandals or waterproof flats.
Q: Can I wear light colors if I’m only traveling by car? A: Even the walk from the car to the porch can ruin a white set. Why take the risk? Save the whites for a sunny day.
