The Legacy Manual: How to Make Your Kurta Sets Last for 20 Years
Read time: 3 min · Last updated: 2026-01-16
If you buy a Saroj Jain kurta set and it only lasts for 2 years, you’ve made a mistake in care.
Our fabrics (Chanderi, Mulmul, Modal, Silk) are "Lifetime" materials. They are stronger than the synthetic "Fast Fashion" clothes you buy at the mall. But they are also more "Human." They have a pulse. They need to breathe. And they need to be treated with the same respect that went into making them.
Wait till you see why a 15-minute maintenance routine once every 6 months will make your wardrobe an heirloom.
The "Initial" Ritual
When you first receive your high-end set: 1. Dry Clean the FIRST time. This "Sets" the dyes and the structure of the garment. It ensures the shape doesn't shift for the rest of its life. 2. The Sun Test: Don't leave it in the direct, harsh afternoon sun for hours. It will "Zoned" (fade) the natural vegetable and mud-based dyes.
The "Washing" Manifesto (The 4 Nos)
- NO Machine: Even a "Gentle Cycle" is too rough for hand-embroidery and fine Mulmul.
- NO Wringing: Never twist the fabric to dry it. You break the silk and cotton fibers. Squeeze gently inside a towel.
- NO Hot Water: It shocks the natural fibers and causes shrinkage.
- NO Harsh Detergent: Use a "Baby-safe" or "Silk-specific" liquid soap.
The "Storage" Strategy
- Wide Hangers: Never use thin, wire hangers. They create "Shoulder peaks" that are hard to iron out. Use padded or wide wooden ones.
- The Muslin Wrap: Especially for Velvet and Silk. Wrap your sets in white muslin cloth before storing them. It prevents moisture and keeps the metal embroidery (Zardosi/Gota) from oxidizing.
- The Lavender/Neem Hack: Use natural dried neem leaves or lavender sachets to keep moths away. Avoid naphthalene balls directly touching the fabric—the chemicals can stain.
The "Ironing" Logic
Always iron on Inverted (inside out). * Use a lot of steam. * Never let a hot iron touch Mirror-work or delicate Gota-Patti directement. * Ironing the reverse side protects the "Puff" of the embroidery and the "Sheen" of the silk.
FAQs
Q: Can I remove a wine stain at home? A: NO. Don't touch it. Don't rub it. You’ll only push the stain deeper into the natural fibers. Take it to a professional dry cleaner immediately and tell them exactly what it is.
Q: Should I store them in plastic bags? A: Never. Natural fibers need to "Breathe." Plastic traps moisture and can lead to mildew and yellowing of white sets.
Q: How often should I wash? A: Only when absolutely necessary. If you’ve only worn it for 3 hours at a dinner, just hang it in a well-ventilated room overnight and store it. Washing is a "Cost" to the fabric's life.
