The Artist Behind the Print: Inside the World of Woodblock Carving

Read time: 3 min · Last updated: 2026-01-16

When you look at our handblock printed kurta sets, you’re usually looking at the colors and the flowers. But I want you to look deeper. I want you to see the "Shadow" of a tool that was made six months ago by an old man in a small village near Jaipur.

The "Block" is the soul of the print. Without the block carver, the printer has nothing. And block carving is one of the most underrated, physically demanding, and artistically brilliant trades in the world.

The Wood: Shisham (Indian Rosewood)

You can't just use any wood. It needs to be hard. It needs to resist the moisture of the dye. It needs to not "Warp" in the Rajasthani heat. We use Shisham. It’s seasoned for months. It has the perfect grain for tiny, intricate details.

The 7-Day Carve

To make a single "Buta" (small floral) block: 1. The design is drawn on paper. 2. The paper is glued to the wood. 3. The carver uses a small chisel and a wooden mallet. 4. One wrong hit? The block is ruined. Seven days of work down the drain.

There are no "Delete" buttons in block carving. It’s total focus. Total commitment to the design.

The Holes in the Wood

If you look at the back of a block, you’ll see tiny holes drilled through it. Most people think these are for weight. They aren't. They are "Air Vents." When the block hits the fabric, air needs to escape so the dye spreads evenly. If there are no vents, you get "Bubbles" in your print.

This is the kind of "Ancient Engineering" that ensures your kurta set looks perfect.

Why Hand-Carved Beats Laser-Cut

Yes, we have lasers now. But laser-cut blocks are "Sharp." They create "Soulless" prints. Hand-carved blocks have * The Bevel: The carver naturally tapers the edges. * The Personality: No two blocks are 100% identical. This is what gives our kurta sets that "Warm" and "Human" feel.

When you wear our handblock sets, you’re wearing the sweat and the focus of a carver who has been doing this for 40 years. You’re wearing a masterpiece.

FAQs

Q: Can I buy the blocks? A: Yes, many carvers sell "Decorative" blocks. But a "Working" block is a tool of the trade. They are passed down from father to son like heirlooms.

Q: How many blocks are used for one outfit? A: For a complex print, up to 5 blocks (one for each color). Each one must align perfectly. It’s a "Layered" puzzle.

Q: Do the carvers get paid well? A: We ensure our carvers and printers are paid at a premium rate. Protecting the craft means protecting the artist.

Honor the human touch in every thread by choosing our authentic, hand-carved block-print kurta sets.
