What Is Brocade Fabric? A Boutique Guide to the Woven Classic

A customer held up a red kurta set in our JP Nagar boutique and asked, "Is this brocade or just printed?" It was brocade, and the difference is real. Brocade fabric is woven, not printed. The pattern is built into the cloth as it is made, often with zari threads that catch the light. Once you know how to spot it, you will never mistake it for a print again.

Quick Summary
  • Brocade is a woven fabric. The design is raised and built into the cloth, not printed on top.
  • It is heavier than cotton or georgette and holds a structured, formal shape.
  • Zari brocade shimmers and suits festive and wedding wear.
  • A brocade kurta or co-ord set is a comfortable alternative to full silk.
  • Brocade needs dry cleaning and careful storage.

What Is Brocade Fabric?

Brocade is a woven fabric where the pattern is raised and created as the cloth is made. The weaver interlaces extra threads, often silk, gold, or silver zari, to form motifs that sit on the surface. Nothing is stamped or printed on afterward. That weave is what gives brocade its texture and its price.

How Does Brocade Feel Compared to Other Fabrics?

Fabric Feel Weight Best For
Brocade Textured, raised weave Medium-heavy Festive, weddings, parties
Silk Smooth, soft Medium Receptions, formal events
Cotton Soft, breathable Light Day wear, office, summer
Velvet Plush, heavy Heavy Winter weddings, evenings

When Should You Wear Brocade?

Brocade shines at festive and evening events. A brocade co-ord set or kurta set carries enough weight to feel dressy without a full lehenga. At our boutique, we often recommend brocade to guests who want to look festive but stay comfortable through a long evening of dinner and dancing.

Is Brocade Right for Daytime Functions?

Mostly, no. Brocade is woven thick, so it holds heat. For a daytime haldi or mehendi, cotton or chanderi feels better. If your function runs into the evening, a brocade set can work, but we suggest a light inner layer so the heavier weave never feels heavy on you.

How Do You Care for Brocade?

Dry clean brocade. Water and rough handling can pull the zari threads and dull the sheen. Store it folded in a muslin bag, away from direct light. Do not hang heavy brocade sets for months. The weight can stretch the shoulders out of shape.

FAQs

What is brocade fabric made of?

Brocade uses a base of silk, cotton, or synthetic threads, with extra woven threads layered in, often metallic zari, to form the raised pattern.

Is brocade the same as Banarasi?

Banarasi is a type of brocade woven in Varanasi, usually on a silk base. All Banarasi is brocade, but not all brocade is Banarasi.

Can I wear brocade in summer?

Brocade is a heavier weave, so it is better for evenings or cooler months. For summer days, cotton or chanderi breathes better.

How do I clean a brocade kurta set?

Dry clean only. Water can pull the zari threads and dull the finish.

Is brocade good for a wedding guest?

Yes. A brocade co-ord or kurta set is dressy enough for a wedding or reception and far easier to move in than a heavy lehenga.
